A probability distribution function approach to modelling rainfall–runoff response for data-sparse catchments

چکیده
A rainfall–runoff (RR) model considering the spatial variation of rainfall, soil infiltration capability and soil storage capacity over a catchment and based on probability distribution functions, is used for rainfall–runoff modelling. The model combines infiltration excess (Horton) and saturation excess (Dunne) mechanisms. Moreover, it is applied to a data sparse catchment. Model parameters of the studied data sparse catchment are inferred from its parent gauged basin. In addition, a semi-distributed RR model called TOPMODEL is also employed in the parent gauged basin for comparison. Results show that the RR model can, to a certain extent, be applied to data sparse regions based upon hydrological similarity between the study catchment and its parent basin.

a Comparison Study Between the Joint Probability Approach and Time Series Rainfall Modelling in Coastal Detention Pond Analysis (RESEARCH NOTE)
In tidally affected coastal catchments detention pond should be provided to store flood surface water. A comparison between the full simulation approach based on the joint probability method and time series rainfall modeling via the annual maximum of pond level was undertaken to investigate the assumptions of independence between variables that are necessary in the joint probability method. The...
متن کاملEstimating runoff in ungauged catchments from rainfall, PET and the AWBM model
Multiple linear regressions are used to relate average annual runoff to average annual rainfall and areal potential evapotranspiration (PET) using data from 213 catchments grouped according to location in six of the major Drainage Divisions of Australia. A method is presented for estimating daily runoff from daily rainfall data using the AWBM model, which self-calibrates its surface storage par...
متن کاملMulticriteria design of rain gauge networks for flash flood prediction in semiarid catchments with complex terrain
[1] Despite the availability of weather radar data at high spatial (1 km) and temporal (5–15 min) resolution, ground‐based rain gauges continue to be necessary for accurate estimation of storm rainfall input to catchments during flash flood events, especially in mountainous catchments. Given economical considerations, a long‐standing problem in catchment hydrology is to establish optimal placem...
متن کاملRainfall-runoff modelling using artificial neural networks (ANNs): modelling and understanding
In recent years, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools in order to model complex hydrological processes such as the rainfall-runoff process. In many studies, ANNs have demonstrated superior results compared to alternative methods. ANNs are able to map underlying relationship between input and output data without prior understanding of the process under in...
متن کاملLandscape Controls on Runoff and Streamflow in Large Arid Zone Catchments
The arid zone catchments of the Lake Eyre Basin (LEB, area of 1.2*10km) in central Australia have unregulated, highly variable flow regimes and contain a paucity of gauging stations. In developing hydrological models of these catchments, only limited gauging station data are available for identifying the broad landscape differences influencing runoff and streamflow. The catchments have been div...
